๐Ÿ“– About the Press Freedom Index

โ„น๏ธ Methodology

The Global Press Freedom Index 2026 evaluates 180 countries across five core dimensions: Political context (governmental interference, editorial independence), Legal framework (laws protecting or restricting journalists), Economic context (media ownership concentration, financial pressures), Sociocultural context (self-censorship, hostility toward journalists), and Safety (physical and digital threats, imprisoned journalists).

Scores range from 0โ€“100, with higher scores indicating greater press freedom. Country rankings reflect a composite of quantitative data and qualitative expert assessments. Primary data sources include Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) annual census, Freedom House Freedom of the Press report, and Amnesty International.
