An ongoing look at critical challenges facing journalists and free media around the world today, updated May 2026.
The Global Press Freedom Index 2026 evaluates 180 countries across five core dimensions: Political context (governmental interference, editorial independence), Legal framework (laws protecting or restricting journalists), Economic context (media ownership concentration, financial pressures), Sociocultural context (self-censorship, hostility toward journalists), and Safety (physical and digital threats, imprisoned journalists).
Scores range from 0โ100, with higher scores indicating greater press freedom. Country rankings reflect a composite of quantitative data and qualitative expert assessments. Primary data sources include Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) annual census, Freedom House Freedom of the Press report, and Amnesty International.
Our assessments combine official statistics, journalist testimony, and verified field reports from 180 countries.
Every country assessed โ from top-ranked free press nations to the world's most repressive media environments.
Continuously updated information reflecting new laws, arrested journalists, and shifting media landscapes.
Validated by media freedom NGOs and journalists on the ground to ensure accuracy and relevance.
